Guide to Smoke Control Maintenance

SCA Maintenance Guide: What It Means for Smoke Ventilation Compliance

The Smoke Control Association (SCA) has released its latest Guidance on Maintenance of Smoke Control Equipment (Rev 1.0, 2025), setting a new industry benchmark for ensuring smoke ventilation systems remain compliant and operational.

At FDS Maintenance, we welcome this long-awaited guide, which aligns with ANNEX I of BS 9999:2017 and BS 9991:2024. It reinforces what we’ve always advocated—regular, expert-led maintenance is essential for life safety systems.

Our Technical Director, Simon Sheldon, played a key role in shaping this guidance over the past three years, working alongside industry experts to ensure it provides clear, practical recommendations for building owners, facilities managers, and maintenance providers.

What This Means for You

  • A defined standard for smoke control system maintenance
  • Increased clarity on compliance with British Standards
  • A stronger focus on system reliability and life safety
